The Young Artist Competition is a great opportunity for local musicians to earn deserved scholarship for their pursuit of secondary education. Meet this year’s winner, Olivia Johann. Olivia will be joining the City of Fairfax Band at the “Legends of the Air” concert, May 13.
Oboist Olivia Johann is a junior at TJHSST, in Alexandria, VA. Beginning in 2015, Olivia has won first place at the Friday Morning Music Club Ross-Roberts, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto, Virginia MTA Concerto, Northern Virginia MTA Concerto, and Asian American Music Society competitions. In addition, Olivia placed second at the MTNA Southern Division in South Florida after winning the VA state tier. Olivia was also a finalist for the Marine Band and the Army Orchestra competitions in both 2016 and 2017, and has performed as soloist on various stages, such as the John Philip Sousa Band Hall, Brucker Hall, James Black Music Center Hall, Millennium Stage (Kennedy Center), and Armstrong Hall with the Shenandoah Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. Olivia is in her third year with the American Youth Philharmonic, has performed on district bands and a senior regional orchestra, and has been invited to participate at concerts with the Army Orchestra and Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. She relishes performing at benefit concerts, raising funds for local charities, mentoring elementary school kids at science experiments, and helping peers with writing assignments through her school clubs. Olivia also enjoys competing in poetry recitation tournaments and writing contests.
