In the summer of 1969, some brass, woodwind, and percussion players gathered on the Fairfax City Hall steps with one goal: enjoy performing concert band music for the community. It launched The City of Fairfax Band Association’s 50 years (and counting!) of live, local, and affordable music for all ages. During that time the City of Fairfax Band has been joined by two other concert bands: The Main Street Community Band and The Northern Virginia Youth Winds comprised of the Junior and Senior groups. Today our nearly 300 volunteer musicians perform in various groups large and small across Northern Virginia and Washington.
The City of Fairfax Band and other Association ensembles have achieved performance standards that gained national recognition, including North America’s most prestigious honor for a community concert band, the Sudler Silver Scroll. Music Director, Robert Pouliot also earned national praise. The Association of Concert Bands bestowed on him its Outstanding Conductor Award.
