City of Fairfax Band
Join the City of Fairfax Band as they celebrate 50 years since their inaugural concert in the summer of 1969! Some of the original musicians who were just teenagers at Fairfax High School still perform in what has become a semi-professional musical ensemble. Over the decades the City of Fairfax Band has won numerous prestigious awards. The 50th season begins with the Fall concert – ‘Originals’ – featuring concert music commissioned by the band over the years. Included in this concert is the world premiere of Bruce Broughton’s beautiful work – ‘A Southern Jubilee’. Back by popular demand this holiday season is the Fairfax Choral Society joining the band for the annual celebration ‘Christmas in Fairfax’. The celebration goes into full swing in March when they present ‘Music of the Knights’ – the music of Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Sir Elton John in Scott Coulter’s tribute, featuring guest Broadway performers honoring these three giants of the music world. Finally, the 50th Jubilee season concludes with an “Evening at Pops” – a program of wide ranging of musical styles: transcriptions of orchestral classics, concert band novelties and favorites and popular selections, and the traditional celebration of the winner of the annual Young Artist Competition – a scholarship awarded to a promising high school band musician in the community.
Main Street Community Band
The Main Street Community Band, known for its spirit and energy, and above all – their popular and appealing musical selections – kicks off its season with a concert at the Fairfax Fall Festival in the Old Town Square. Get into the Halloween spirit with this fun family concert. Stop at a food stand, grab an ice cream, and enjoy this wonderful outdoor concert! In December, Santa joins them once again for the annual holiday concert ‘Home for the Holidays’ when band musicians continue their tradition of bringing in homemade goodies for the audience. Warm up this February with the musical journey called ‘Postcards’, as the band takes you through a musical escape around the world. In the Spring, the band plays in the Spotlight on the Arts series – with more homemade cookies – to celebrate joy, love, and the promise of new beginnings. What? They even play video game music? Come and hear Baba Yetu,’ the Grammy Award winning piece written for the video game Civilization IV.
