Education plays a major role in the City of Fairfax Band Association’s mission. The new Youth Winds Program provides a “side-by-side” experience: CFBA members playing with middle and high school students at the students’ schools in rehearsals with their band directors. The program primarily focuses on schools in underserved areas of Fairfax County.
City of Fairfax Band Association adult band members who participate in this program are current or former Fairfax County band directors, retired musicians from Washington, DC military bands, private teachers, and musicians with advanced musical training and playing experience.
Program goals include mentoring students, modeling the impact of music in the community, and demonstrating that music can be part of students’ lives when they are adults no matter what profession they choose.
